Miss B had her cast of for 18 days on Friday. The doctor said it wasn’t a break, it was more like a fracture from the bones buckling when she fell on it.
On Friday we went back to the orthopedic doctor that wrapped Brooklynn’s arm in her up in the purple cast she has been so fond of. On the way there I thought I would take a video to capture her thoughts on her wrist and what happened to it…
Hard to hear with Hunter trying to get attention in the background, but she said that she wanted to keep her cast so if someone else falls off the monkey bars they can use her cast to feel better. What a sweetheart!
She was a little scared when they got the saw out to cut the cast off. But after the assistant explained it to her and B was able to touch it, I think she was okay with it. After the cast was cut off though… oh boy… breakdown! B started crying saying that her wrist hurt and she was almost begging for a new cast to put on.
After a couple x-rays to confirm, the doctor came in and said it is all healed! Yay! :) What Brooklynn was complaining about was the stiffness in her wrist because she hasn’t been able to use it. The cure, some Motrin and just get her to slowly start using her wrist.
When the doctor was on the way out she was looking sad, and when we asked her what was wrong she said, “I will miss my cast.” Then she asked the doctor about keeping it for other children, and he explained how they are made to fit each person. So, she decided it was best to throw it away.
She got a sucker on the way out and I got her first pic of bring cast-free again.
Hard to see but she is sporting a pretty decent cast tan! She is almost back to normal now and looking forward to getting started again with all her activities.
Ahh … long weekend. We didn’t fill it with anything too spectacular, just filled it with family and friends. But this weekend we figured now that Hunter is closing in on a year, and well … the size of a toddler, we are done with the baby stuff.
For a full week now he has been officially done with bottles. Woo hoo! To save Nana from herself I even moved the bottles up to the top shelf in the cupboard (hee hee!). He doesn’t seem like he has missed them at all.
This weekend Hunter also gained some confidence in getting his feet under him from sitting on his butt. By the end of the weekend he was actually getting pretty good at it. Just one more thing to baby proof.
Last but not least, Hunter had some spaghetti for the first time. Not that half-pureed stuff in the jar. He got the real deal… chopped up into tiny pieces. And oh yes, I got pics. Here are some of the good shots I got.
Every Tuesday night we walk up to the mall to have dinner. It’s a new tradition we are trying out, and so far I’m loving it. When the pot of gold at the end of the walk is a big greasy burger, with baskets of fries and tater tots… well it’s almost enough to make me break into a run.
So, last night we are walking up to the mall to get some dinner. We are just about there and I hear the shuffle of flip flops, and a scream… B is down again. She started to run a little to catch up, lost her footing and bam. And wouldn’t you know it was her left arm again! She skinned her left knee, left elbow, and even managed to scrap some purple off her cast.
After we got home we cleaned her up and put her to bed. When she woke up the first thing she told me was, “Mommy! My boo-boos feel all better!”
I only hope we can get through the summer without another round of doctor’s trips. Who am I kidding … at this point a week without an injury would be cause for celebration!
One month from today Hunter hits the 1 year mark. That means one more month of formula, and one more month of a rear facing car seat. I can hardly wait! We will soon be welcoming whole milk into the house, and Hunter will be thrilled he can finally enjoy the DVDs in the car. Oh, and we will be getting a visit with the pediatrician so we can see how he tips the scales at the 1 year mark.
In other Hunter news, in the past month he has really gotten good at waving, clapping, making noises, talking (not like he is putting together sentences… let’s face it, he says ‘mama’ and I practically want to throw a party in celebration) and he is drinking out of a sippy cup for all but his last bottle of the day. He has also gone from almost crawling to speed crawling around the house. Especially when we open the pantry or frig is open…
… what can I say… the boy loves his food! No kidding, I have seen him crawl over things on the floor to get to the frig before it closes.
That’s right, Brookie-lynn has her first broken bone. It is a fracture in her left wrist. The doctor explained it as her bones buckling. But I’m getting a little ahead of myself… here’s how it went down…
After breakfast yesterday we were sitting around the house and I thought we should go for a walk. B hopped on her bike, Hunter hitched a ride in his stroller and we were off. B asked to go to the park, so we went by the park and let her play. I was holding her up and showing her how to use the monkey bars.
Next thing I know she says, “Mom look I can do it by myself!” in this voice like she was so proud of herself. Then she leaps to the first bar and dangles by both arms. Before I could even react she attempts to swing to the next bar. Apparently not yet grasping the concept of how monkey bars work she lets go with both hands to swing to the next bar. SPLAT! She lands on her left arm and lets out a scream and the tears start shooting out immediately.
She could move her arm, fingers, even wrist so we were all convinced it was all mental. But after spending all day yesterday laid up, and complaining about how it hurt first thing this morning a doctor’s appointment was in order. Little did we know this would he the start of an all day adventure of uncounted calls to doctors and hospitals, and hours in the car paying many a visit. Here is how our day went:
10 am: Pediatrician’s office - Go directly to Troy Beaumont for Xray, do not pass go, do not collect $200
11-ish am: Troy Beaumont Xray - Took xray and then sent home with a ‘will call ya’
about noon: Beaumont calls - ‘uh yeah, you need to come back it’s a fracture’
1 pm … I think: Back at Troy Beaumont - B got a splint and a referral to a computer generated Osteopathic Doctor
??? pm: Toys R Us to pick up an Ariel doll to aid the healing process. Call computer generated Osteopathic Doctor referral. Turns out they don’t see children that young. Thanks for the great referral there Beaumont. Started round of calls around town for a Pediatric Osteopathic Doctor. After who knows how many calls and referrals to who knows how many places get a doctor who can see be today … in Southfield.
??? pm + 5 minutes: Back in car - Hauling ass through thunderstorms and hail to get to doctor before they close. If we don’t make this appointment I can’t get any doctor to see her until Friday.
4 pm: Dr. Ditkoff - Filling out more paper work and trying to keep B entertained. Waiting again to get called.
5:30 pm: ALL DONE! - Brooklynn picked out a purple cast, and for an additional fee they could make it out of water proof material. The doctor was great! And the cast is so much better then the splint.
The good news from all of this is she can still do all her activities. Doctor said if she tells us it hurts then she is doing too much. She can still swim, dance, karate, even some simple gymnastics as long as she lays off the cartwheels for awhile.
Lessons from the day:
Beaumont emergency room referrals are only good if you are an average, healthy adult
Unlimited cell phone minutes & texting rocks!
To a 4-year old a toy makes it all better
Thank yous:
Pediatric Health Care, you guys always rock and apparently give the best stickers.
Staff at Troy Beaumont for moving us through quickly and being good to my B (I know a few good geeks to help work out the kinks on that computer generated referral system)
Dr. Ditkoff and his staff in Southfield for squeezing us in and been so cool! Staying after hours to finish up with us, and not rushing us out the door was awesome! My son’s name is Hunter … I have a feeling you will get to know him pretty well.
This past Sunday we didn’t do much more then hang out around the house. Brooklynn woke up and picked out a blank card from a box of them I had. On the inside she then decided to draw a picture of her and her daddy and write her name.
Now she wanted to fill his card. So she decided to color him a Strawberry Shortcake picture, cause as I learned that day.. Daddy loves Strawberry Shortcake (I know he has a thing for red heads, but I thought Ariel has his heart?).
B then picked out a sheet of stickers and we stuffed it all in his card and she even wrote Daddy on it. Of course I coached her along by drawing each letter on scrap paper first, but she did it. When she puts her mind to it she can do some cool stuff.
Later on the folks came over for some dinner and we hung outside for awhile. Papa got out her wiffle baseball set out, which B really liked. But come to think of it … he was sitting on the front porch and tossing the ball towards her while she stood by the cars, hitting the ball towards the house. Okay, 2 things… 1. This never would have been allowed when I was growing up, and 2. Note to self: when B gets older and plays softball or baseball Papa must be supervised while pitching.
Today Hunter’s front two teeth finally broke through. Phew! After what seemed like weeks of swollen gums and fussiness the two teeth decided to show themselves. They also came with extra fussiness and of course the drool is again like a faucet that we can’t seem to turn off.
This weekend Hunter also mastered the art of crawling. It’s almost like a speed crawl. He can be in the living room, I go into the kitchen and open the refrigerator and I swear I look down and he is right there. If he has learned one thing, it’s that the food is in the kitchen.
Despite this being the second time around I seemed to have forgotten how quickly they can get themselves into trouble when they start moving. Have fun Nana!
This past weekend Brooklynn not only graduated preschool, but she also had her first dance recital.
She was great. Without fear she got up on the stage with all the lights on, music playing, and audience and danced her little butt off. Her dance was to “Under The Sea” from Little Mermaid. Part of the time she was dancing Scott and I caught her singing along with the music while she was dancing. A born performer!
Of course, I don’t know what she was most excited about… the fact that she got to dance to a Little Mermaid song, she got to watch Cinderella 2 backstage after her dance, or that she got to wear mommy’s makeup. Either way she said she had a great time and asked to take more dance classes.
Friday was Brooklynn’s last day of Preschool. I can’t believe how quickly almost 5 years have passed and she will be starting kindergarten in the fall. On her last day of school they had a special party, and presentation for the parents. Sang songs, watched a video of the class throughout the year, and of course had some cake to celebrate.
(B is in the front row in a pink dress with white leggings)
She truly made an impact on her teachers who have remarked several times during the school year how empathetic she is towards other kids. Mrs. H got choked up one day telling my mom how much Brooklynn warms her heart with how she acts with her classmates. After each child was presented their preschool graduation certificate they gave the children special awards that represented the quality the teachers will remember that child by. Brooklynn received the kindness award.
Here are some pics of the special day:
Here is Brooklynn getting her preschool graduation certificate from her teachers.
Brooklynn and one of her BFFs Anna decided to help the teachers with the cake.
I got this pic of B while we were leaving. I thought it was such a great pic to capture her, the school and the bus she that took the kids for ride around the neighborhood.
B and her baby. I mean, her baby brother.
As we were leaving another of B’s BFFs April yelled bye to Brooklynn. Brooklynn jumped out of the car and over to April to tell her bye and give her a big hug. It was so sweet!
